Railroad View Books of the American West.

...six view folios published by Van Noy Inter-State Company (circa 1915).

This CD contains the page images and searchable text from six paperback portfolios of scenic hand-colored lithographs. The folios were published around 1915 by the western railroads to encourage tourist travel on their railways.

Published by Van Noy Inter-State Co., each portfolio typically includes 22 to 24 images hand-colored from photographs, a two-page description of the scenes depicted, and a route map for the railroad. (The images of "The Sunset Route" are sepia. And, although no route map was included in the Western Pacific folio, that system is shown in the route map of the Denver & Rio Grande folio.)

The folios included on this CD are:

The Overland Trail from the Golden Gate to the Great Salt Lake.
Along the Southern Pacific - The Road of a Thousand Wonders. (Southern Pacific)

Rocky Mountain Views.
On the Rio Grande, "The Scenic Line of the World". Consisting of Twenty-four Colored Views from Recent Photographs. (Denver & Rio Grande)

The Shasta Route.
Along the Southern Pacific - The Road of a Thousand Wonders. (Southern Pacific)

From Salt Lake City to San Francisco Bay.
Along the line of the Western Pacific Railway - The Feather River Cañon Route. (Western Pacific)

The Sunset Route.
From El Paso to Los Angeles. (Southern Pacific)

Lake Michigan to Puget Sound.
Electrically through the Rockies, Bitter Root, and Cascade Mountains. Along the line of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. (Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway - The Milwaukee Road)

The images featured spectacular vistas along the railways, and other scenes and attractions on the rail tour. The lithographed plates were typically 8½ by 6½ inches and were glued to 12-inch by 9-inch colored stock paper inside an embossed or printed frame. The two-page sheets were stapled at the fold, inserted into an attractive paper wrap, and tied at the binding edge with a decorative string. Folios sold for $1.00 to $1.50.
