by Henry J. Winser (1883)

This BookWebCD includes the page images and searchable text of the traveler's guide published in 1883 upon completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, the first northern transcontinental rail route. The guide includes 276 pages of text, an additional 40 engravings, a large map of the region served by the railroad, 8 pages of travel book ads, and an errata page.
See details.

The guide has nearly 300 pages of station-by-station description and travelogue of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s, and of the associated railroads running from Wisconsin and Minnesota into Washington and Oregon. The book provides contemporary histories of the settlements, the native and immigrant peoples, and the recently concluded Indian Wars of the region. The engravings show early settlement and landmarks along the NPRR line, and a color map of the northwestern United States locates the various rail lines of the NPRR system.
