Travel Books (1866-1894)

These twenty-five "illustrated books of travel" were published between 1866 and 1894 by the Religious Tract Society (RTS) of London, which was founded in 1799 to publish and distribute Christian literature. By the 1860s, the RTS had diversified into fiction and non-fiction books on many subjects, including poetry, children's stories, song birds, and a series of illustrated travelogues entitled "...pictures drawn by pen and pencil".

Twenty-three of the "pen and pencil" books take a country as its subject, with "Sea Pictures..." and "London Pictures..." completing the set. The "pen and pencil" travel books are 190 to 230 pages, and each includes between 70 and 190 in-text and full-page engravings. Most have a page-size map of the country, and some include a folded color map. Many end with a six- to ten-page section of advertisements for other books in the series.

The books became popular as prizes for school achievements, as such as winning competitions and graduating, and many of our copies are embossed or inscribed as presentations or awards.

Each CD of our"...pictures drawn with pen and pencil" series provides images of a pair of these delightful books, and "Australian Pictures..." is paired with a missionary's view of the South Seas:
"Life in the Southern Isles".
