SharingHistory.com's
BookWebCD Format
(and how to use it)
The "BookWebCD" Format
SharingHistory.com
makes public-domain history books available on CDs as HTML
webs.
Our books-on-CD are not in an eBook format, nor in Acrobat®
(pdf) format. Instead, BookWebCDs use your internet browser to display the scanned images
of each
page from the book, and to search the text of the body of the book.
Setting Up Your PC
to Use a BookWebCD
Use your internet browser to navigate
a
BookWebCD, as if you were surfing an internet website. The web is best viewed at a
screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. At that display setting, you can set your browser to view the entire page image without
scrolling. Below
are Microsoft Windows© HELP instructions on how to change your screen
resolution:
To change your screen
resolution:
-
Open Display in Control Panel.
-
On the Settings tab, under Screen
resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply.
-
When prompted to apply the settings, click OK.
Your screen will turn black for a moment.
-
Once your screen resolution changes, you
have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the
change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting.
Notes:
-
To open Display, click Start, point to Settings, click Control
Panel, and then double-click Display.
-
A higher screen resolution reduces the size
of items on your screen and increases the relative space on your desktop.
To avoid scrolling, turn off all of the browser navigation buttons and bars.
(In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, just select Full Screen from the
View menu -- or just press F11.)

Searching
a BookWebCD
On the
Search page of each BookWebCD is an approximation of the text of the book. It
is developed from the scanned pages using Optical Character Recognition software and, though proofed to correct proper names, it may contain some misspellings.
Typically, the text of the index, figures, and stand-alone tables are not included.
Key text from embedded tables is usually included. Numbers and repetitive text in tables have been removed.
To search a book, use your browser's Edit, Find (Ctrl+F) command to locate a text string,
and click on the highlighted text to go to that page image.
Printing Page Images:
The BookWebCD pages are JPEG images. Printing these images from your browser may not give good
formatting results. To print a page image, right-click
your mouse over it, save it to a folder, and print it with a graphics
program, such as Microsoft® Paint, or a freeware graphics viewer/printer application.
