In publishing Cassier’s Magazine, an engineering monthly, Louis Cassier has left us an unmatched illustrated and contemporary guide to the development and industrial application of technology in the two decades before World War I. In that era, cut-and-try innovation was the province of every ambitious shopman and mechanic. Most technologies were being rapidly improved by a generation self-educated engineers and confident tinkerers. Benefits of technology were flowing to all classes, improving the quality of life at a quickening pace.
Cassier’s Magazine and a similar Victorian-era publication met a wide popular and professional demand for information on advances in technology and industrial development. Both magazines tracked the ongoing naval arms race and introductions of new military weaponry. International industrial competition was intense, and the evolution of manufacturing methods was keenly followed. Revolutions in transportation are documented, as is the expansion of electrical service into industries, farms, and the home.
SharingHistory.com has collected many volumes of Cassier’s, and is producing topical collections of the articles. Each BookWebCD is a time capsule on one technical subject.
The initial BookWebCDs in this series include the four Special Editions:

...the story of America's first great hydropower development.
The Marine Number (August 1897).
