This CD contains the page images and searchable text from six paperback portfolios of scenic hand-colored lithographs. The folios were published around 1915 by the western railroads to encourage tourist travel on their railways.
Published by Van Noy Inter-State Co., each portfolio typically includes 22 to 24 images hand-colored from photographs, a two-page description of the scenes depicted, and a route map for the railroad. (The images of "The Sunset Route" are sepia. And, although no route map was included in the Western Pacific folio, that system is shown in the route map of the Denver & Rio Grande folio.)

This CD contains the page images and searchable text from six paperback portfolios of scenic photographs published a century ago by the Boston & Maine Railroad to encourage travel on its rail network:
Mountains of New England. (39 illustrations) Seashore of New England. (31 illustrations) Rivers of New England. (31 illustrations) New England Lakes. (31 illustrations) Picturesque New England. (39 illustrations) The Charles River to the Hudson. (39 illustrations)
The portfolios were part of a promotional campaign that included birds-eye views of scenic regions, and a series of brochures for localities served by the line. Quoting a portfolio: In the succeeding pages the camera of the Boston & Maine Railroad Company’s special artist has faithfully portrayed the salient characteristics of some of the famous waterways in the territory traversed by that great system.

Also included on this CD are a 1921 history of the railroad, a 1917 travel and lodging guide book for destinations served by the railroad, and an 1898 map of its routes.
Francis Boardman Crowninshield Bradlee's Boston & Maine Railroad - A History Of The Main Road, With Its Tributary Lines. was published in the Historical Collections of the Essex Institute (Salem, Massachusetts) and was reprinted in 1921. In addition to over 80 pages of history, there are period photos of the locomotives, depots, leaders, and ephemera of the railroad. A map of the Boston and Maine Railroad routes is provided here as six panels.
In 1917, the Boston & Maine Passenger Traffic Department distributed Where to Stay in Vacationland: A List of Hotels, Boarding Houses, Farms and Camps in that Portion of New England Reached by the Boston and Maine Railroad. This 76-page guide is illustrated with halftone photos, and includes listings of hundreds of places for rail travelers to visit and stay. A map of the Boston and Maine Railroad routes is provided here as four panels.
The 1898 system map Boston & Maine Railroad and Connections. was published by Rand McNally and Company, Boston. The entire map is available online at the Library of Congress, but a portion of the map showing the rail network is provided here in 70 panels.
